Exploring the Weave of Energy: How Sensation Shapes Our Spiritual Journey

What does it mean to be spiritual?

I have always found that question interesting because spirituality means something different to everyone. Some people will tell you immediately, “I’m very spiritual.” Others will just as quickly tell you, “I’m not spiritual at all.” And then some live somewhere in between. They aren't quite sure what they believe, but they're curious. I don't believe spirituality requires a particular religion, belief system, ritual, or even the willingness to call yourself spiritual.

In fact, I have met people who insist they aren't spiritual while simultaneously describing experiences that, to me, are deeply connected to spirituality. You can hear it in the words they use. You can sometimes see it in the way their body moves or responds. They may not recognize it as spiritual because they have already decided what the word spirituality is supposed to mean.

Exploring the weave of energy: how sensation shapes our spiritual journey.

What happens if we remove the label?

What happens if, instead, we begin with energy?

The Macro and the Micro

Energy is constantly moving around us.

Look outward and think about the enormity of the universe—the planets, stars, gravity, light, heat, motion, matter. Nothing is truly standing still. There is movement, interaction, transformation, and energy everywhere.

That is the macro.

Now bring your attention inward.

Your heart is beating. Your lungs are expanding and contracting. Electrical impulses are traveling through your nervous system. Muscles are contracting and releasing. Your brain is processing information. Hormones and other chemical messengers communicate throughout your body.

That is the micro.

Yet even those words are relative.

Your body can be the micro when compared with the universe, but your entire body becomes the macro when compared with a single cell. Move inward again, and there is another micro. Move outward, and there is another macro.

Macro. Micro. Inner. Outer. Layers within layers.

This is one of the ways I have come to understand our relationship with ourselves and the world around us.

We aren't separate from the movement of energy simply because we don't consciously notice it. Energy doesn't require our belief in it to exist.

And that brings me back to spirituality.

You Don't Have to Believe Anything

Imagine three people.

One says, “I am spiritual. I feel energy very strongly.”

Another says, “I don't believe in any of that.”

And the third says, “I don't know. Maybe. I'm not sure.”

I find that third space fascinating.

I'm not sure leaves a door open.

You don't have to walk through it. You don't even have to believe there is anything on the other side. But curiosity gives you the opportunity to explore something before deciding what it means.

Even the person who says, “I don't believe in energy,” still has a body filled with sensation.

So rather than asking that person to believe something, I might ask something much simpler:

What do you feel?

Not what do you think you should feel.

Not what have you been told it means.

What do you actually notice happening inside your body?

Maybe there is warmth.

Tightness.

A flutter.

Pressure.

A tingling sensation.

A feeling of expansion or contraction.

Maybe there is almost nothing at first.

That's okay too. Because learning to notice sensation is itself a practice.

When the Body Starts Talking

Our minds can be incredibly loud.

We analyze. We judge. We anticipate. We replay conversations. We create stories about what happened yesterday and what might happen tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the body is communicating in the present.

Sometimes quietly.

And sometimes not so quietly.

I've often thought of the body as being a little like a child trying to get your attention.

At first there may be a gentle tug.

Hey. Pay attention to me.

We ignore it.

Another tug.

I'm still here.

We keep going.

Eventually that quiet request can become much harder to ignore.

That doesn't mean every ache, illness, or physical condition is caused by blocked energy or by failing to listen to your body. Human health is far more complicated than that.

But our bodies absolutely provide information. Stress, emotion, exhaustion, excitement, fear, pleasure, safety, discomfort, and connection can all have physical expressions.

The question is whether we notice them.

Sensation Changes the Conversation

This is where things become especially interesting to me. Once we stop trying to understand everything exclusively through thought and begin including sensation, our relationship with ourselves can change.

Instead of asking only:

What do I think about this?

We can also ask:

What happens inside my body when I think about this?

Those are not necessarily the same answer.

Your mind may say yes while your body tightens.

Your mind may say no while something inside you feels curious and expansive.

Your mind may insist that you're perfectly fine while your shoulders are practically touching your ears.

Neither the mind nor the body needs to become the enemy. The point isn't to abandon thought and blindly follow sensation.

The opportunity is to become aware of both.

That creates more information.

And with more information comes more choice.

Where Tantra Enters the Story

This is one of the reasons Tantra has held such meaning in my work.

Tantra isn't simply about sexuality, although sexuality can certainly be part of the human experience. Tantra can invite us to become more present with sensation, breath, energy, emotion, connection, and awareness.

It asks us to experience rather than merely intellectualize.

That can be surprisingly difficult.

Many of us spend enormous amounts of time living from the neck up. We're very good at thinking about our bodies without necessarily knowing how to be in them.

Coaching can open one doorway.

Tantra can open another.

Longer immersions allow us to explore more deeply.

And mentorship creates the opportunity to continue exploring those layers over time.

Different pathways. Different people. Different needs.

There is no single experience I can promise someone will have because transformation isn't something I can manufacture for another person.

What I can provide is an opportunity to explore.

And Then the Micro Becomes the Macro Again

Perhaps this is the part that fascinates me most.

When we change something within ourselves—the micro—it doesn't necessarily remain contained there.

The way we experience ourselves can affect the way we communicate.

The way we communicate affects our relationships.

Our relationships affect families, communities, workplaces, and the people whose lives intersect with ours.

The inner begins influencing the outer.

Micro becomes macro.

And then the outer world affects us in return.

Macro becomes micro.

Back and forth.

Inner and outer.

Energy and sensation.

Awareness and choice.

A continuous weave.

Maybe you call that spirituality.

Maybe you call it consciousness.

Maybe you call it energy.

Or maybe you're still sitting comfortably in that space of I'm not sure.

You don't need to choose a label.

Instead, perhaps begin with something much simpler.

Stop for a moment.

Become quiet enough to notice yourself.

And ask:

What am I feeling inside my body right now?

Then see where the story takes you.

Now is the time to book a session with me. Stop waiting for 'the right time'. Stop waiting for '_________' (insert excuse).

When you are ready to dive deep, be prepared to hear things you may be scared to hear.

What is said is there for you, so that you can honestly think on it, without judgement.

When we allow ourselves that space, it allows opportunities for growth.

Are you new to me? To Tantra? To something you've never experienced before? One session on its own can serve you. However, growth requires consistency, when requires many sessions.
